It is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure, necessary for diagnosis, planning and treatment. During the procedure, material for cytological/cytometric tests is obtained.
The most frequently performed if thyroid nodules are found in an ultrasound examination
The procedure is performed under ultrasound control, i.e. the doctor constantly monitors the position of the needle inserted into the patient's body.
The needle is inserted into the lesion - e.g. thyroid nodule, enlarged lymph node - then small fragments of the affected tissue get inside; the obtained material is fixed on microscope slides, which are then assessed by a pathologist
The pain of the procedure is not great, it is a small prick
Like any invasive procedure, fine-needle aspiration biopsy carries a certain risk of complications and adverse events. The most common complications (although rare) include: bruising / hematoma at the puncture site, infection of the puncture site, inability to diagnose on the basis of the collected material.
Biological material goes to the laboratory, where it is described. The waiting time for the result is about a month.
